Chapter Sixteen

Anna

When I laugh, it doesn’t feel connected to me. An echo of an echo.

I don’t remember standing up or looking down at Kali and my brother, who are both eyeing me cautiously and with sympathy. My stomach turns, a bit of retribution on Peter’s part for all the sympathetic looks I’ve given him over the last month. Not that he would mean it that way.

“Th-that can’t be true,” I stammer, then laugh again. “That is preposterous. I have no influence. I have never been able to sway a decision or an outcome.”

Kali tries to soothe my rising panic. “It would probably look different on you, Anna, like charisma or a natural leader. Someone who is easy to fall in love with.”

“What?” I whisper and see Peter close his eyes at her words. I know enough about him and his worst fears for him to know what my mind will jump to. “Are you saying Lorna and Brady, they fell in love with me because Peter is my brother?”

“Of course that’s not what I am saying.” Kali rises to her feet while mine carry me backward. “Your power is your own, Anna, separate from Peter. You will attract others wherever you go.” Her warm eyes crinkle, and I know she means it as a compliment.

“But this is just a theory, right?” I can hear the panic in my voice as I look between the two of them.

“Yes, it is only a theory. Theory is all we have when it comes to you.” Kali tries to reach out to me. “Anna, this isn’t a bad thing. My intention was not to upset you.”

The heat is rising in my cheeks as I try to hold in my tears. “No, it’s fine. I just need to take a moment.”

I feel out of my body as I walk away.

But I am just ordinary.

Kali must have started to follow me because I hear Peter tell her to let me go.

It’s just a theory. This is not true. I am human. There is nothing extraordinary about me, except for being the twin of a god.

I have always been happy in his shadow. He’s always wanted me close, even when we were kids standing on the highest branches of the trees hanging low enough to get over the glistening lake. He always wanted me to watch as he spun and dived into the waters. He wanted me to clap, to laugh, to be impressed. Always. I was always telling him not to climb too high. Not to get hurt. I never knew he was invulnerable. In the back of my mind always worried. What if something happened to him? What would I do?

I close my eyes. I was the shadow. I feel more like the moon than a solar system.

My feet lead me, and after a while, I figure out I’m moving in the direction of the hostel. It is true, I have been having fun lately while learning how to use his power. A funny side effect of being his twin but nothing more.
